When Is St. Nicholas Day 2026? Shoes by the Door, Traditions and the Real Saint

On the evening of 5 December, in homes across Europe, a row of freshly polished boots stands by the door. In the morning there are tangerines inside, a few chocolate coins, maybe a gingerbread heart. Anyone who grew up with this remembers it. If you didn’t, it’s one of the easiest Advent traditions to start with your own children.

When is St. Nicholas Day 2026?

• Saturday 5 December 2026: St. Nicholas Eve. Shoes go out before bed. In the Netherlands and Belgium this is the big evening of Sinterklaas.
• Sunday 6 December 2026: St. Nicholas Day, the second Sunday of Advent.

Since the day is a Sunday this year, the morning surprise can come before Mass, and you can tell the story of the saint on the way there.

Who was the real St. Nicholas?

Nicholas was bishop of Myra, a city in Lycia on the south coast of today’s Turkey, in the fourth century. Tradition says he was born in nearby Patara and died on 6 December, around 343 (St. Nicholas Center). Historians actually know very little about his life. The old Catholic Encyclopedia says almost nothing about him is certain beyond the fact that he was bishop of Myra (Catholic Encyclopedia). history

What happened to him after death is well documented: his tomb in Myra became a great place of pilgrimage, and in 1087 sailors from Bari took his relics to Italy, where they still rest in the Basilica of St. Nicholas (Wikipedia). history

The story behind the shoes

The best-known story is a legend, and a lovely one. A poor man had three daughters and no money for their dowries; without them, the girls could not marry. Nicholas came at night and threw a bag of gold through the window, once for each daughter, so that no one would know who had helped. In the retelling, the gold landed in shoes or stockings left by the fire to dry (St. Nicholas Center). tradition

That is where the shoes by the door come from, and the Christmas stockings too. It fits Jesus’ words about giving: “When you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing” (Mt 6:3). Scripture

St. Nicholas and Santa Claus

Santa Claus grew out of Nicholas, by way of the Netherlands and New York. Dutch settlers brought Sinterklaas to New Amsterdam. Washington Irving wrote him into his History of New York (1809); the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (1823), usually credited to Clement Clarke Moore, gave him a sleigh and reindeer; and Thomas Nast’s drawings gave him the look we know (Britannica, Wikipedia). history

You don’t have to choose between them. A simple way to put it for children: “Santa is the story people made up about a real man: Bishop Nicholas, who gave gifts in secret because he loved God and poor people.”

St. Nicholas Day traditions to try at home

A checklist for the evening of 5 December:

• shoes or boots, cleaned and by the door (the polishing is half the fun)
• tangerines or clementines, which stand for the gold
• chocolate coins
• gingerbread or speculaas cookies
• one small gift, not a big one (Christmas is still ahead)
• a note or a carrot for the saint’s horse, as in the Netherlands
• the story of the three daughters, read or told at bedtime

A secret-giving game. Each child draws the name of a family member and, during the week, does one kind thing for them without being caught. On 6 December everyone guesses who their “Nicholas” was. Doing good quietly is what the feast is about.
